New commuting headlight

Like computers headlights have improved by leaps and bounds the last few years. This past summer I sold my old Cygo-Lite light on eBay and used the proceeds to go towards a new NiteNider MiNewt cordless. It has 50 more lumen output, the weighs about 2 pound less, no water bottle batter or wires, charges in 1/2 the time and I can changer from my PC at work via USB too. All this for under $100 which is what I paid for the Cygo-Lite Nitro XM 4 years ago).

If yours headlight is more than 3 years old treat your self to one of the new models on the market and enjoy a few extra hours of riding.

Heaset SpacersDon't exceed the recommended stack height. The rule for the nearly obsolete 1-inch carbon steerers is a maximum 1 inch (25.4 mm) of spacers, plus the stem. For 1 1/8-inch steerers it's 1 1/8 inch (29 mm) plus stem. If you need even more stack height, use a stem with greater rise. If this does not solve your problems unfortunately your frame is too small or its head tube is too short. Wallace Wormley
MP3 players and cyclingThis tip should be an obvious one but iPods and mp3 players should never be worn when cycling. As units get smaller, lighter, cheaper and longer battery time there is a sharp increase of not just runners but cyclist on the roads wearing those little ear buds.

The problem is they can block out the street sounds you need to hear in order to ride defensively. Also cycling with headphones is a misdemeanor in some areas too.

Some cycling clothing is now coming equipped with little mp3 player pockets in their bibs/jerseys/jackets! Please leave the music for the fluid trainer or the spin bike.

Tire RotationRide a pair of tires until the much-faster-wearing rear is shot. Then buy a replacement, but put it on the front and move the slightly worn front tire to the rear. This way, you'll always have your freshest, safest tire with the thickest tread on the wheel that has the most to do with bike control.Unkown
RunningIf you are going to do some cyclocross this season try to mix a day of trail running into your weekly workout. Try to find a route that also has small hills too.Wallace Wormley
Change up for the fall seasonIt's almost the end of the of your cycling season. I switch up my training from Aug-Oct. I cut down on the number of rides from 4-5 to 2-3 and instead of shorter harder race tempo miles I do longer stead tempo rides. This allows me to transition from race season to the charity centuries rides for the fall.Wallace Wormley
Christmas in JulyNow is the time to buy discounted winter and/or indoor training gear. Take stock of what is worn out and needs replacement. Tires, lights, tights, jackets, hats, gloves.

Also remember videos, music, books, posters and gadgets that will keep you motivated for those indoor workouts.
