New commuting headlight

Like computers headlights have improved by leaps and bounds the last few years. This past summer I sold my old Cygo-Lite light on eBay and used the proceeds to go towards a new NiteNider MiNewt cordless. It has 50 more lumen output, the weighs about 2 pound less, no water bottle batter or wires, charges in 1/2 the time and I can changer from my PC at work via USB too. All this for under $100 which is what I paid for the Cygo-Lite Nitro XM 4 years ago).

If yours headlight is more than 3 years old treat your self to one of the new models on the market and enjoy a few extra hours of riding.

Ceramic BearingLot's of hype over the past few years on ceramic bearings and here is my view. While ceramic bearings cost double and sometimes triple the amount to steel bearings. Ceramic bearings are far superior to steel at:
  • Resistance/Drag
  • Strength and durability
  • Weight
A Bottom Bracket is a good example where you can see big benefits in all 3 features but with a headset on the other hand there is very little since you are saving a gram or two and good headset that is properly installed and adjusted with steel bearing has little to know drag should last at least 10 years.

So here is my take on them.

  • Headset - No
  • Bottom Bracket - Yes
  • Hubs - Yes
  • Derailleur Pulleys - No
Next month the different types of ceramic bearings.

Hot FeetFoot problems are a common among cyclist. Even with my Fred Flinstone feet I am luck to say that I have always been able to just put my shoes on an go for a long ride without any discomfort.

That was almost always true until last year. On a really hot day towards the end of my ride noticing my feet were burning and aching like my shoes were two size too small.

The diagnosis was I had not taken enough fluids and electrolytes and was suffering from dehydration. Dehydration is not a good thing and can effect the body in negative ways. Normally my fist indicator are muscle cramps and a little light headed. On this occasion the swelling feet came first. The other 2 normal ones hit me a soon as I got home.

Wireless Computer or Heart Rate ProblemsHigh voltage power lines can cause erratic readings from you wireless computer or heart rate monitor(HRM). Other causes are power lines for trains or even another cyclist right next to you in the pack can result in electrical interference.

Some new computers and HRM use coded signals which prevent this from happening.

Drain hole in Bottom BracketDo you ride in the rain? If the answer is yes, you may want to consider drilling a small hole in the bottom part of your BB shell. This small hole will allow water to drain out of the frame in the event you get caught in the rain. This is a long time pro trick and saves BB bearings from rusting from the inside out. Frozen Carbon seatpostWhile expensive a product called CarboMove by Effetto Mariposa is worth a shot for you to save that expensive frame. Wallace Wormley
Headset Spacers Part 2You will see on a lot of bikes headset spacers above the stem. Here are a couple or reason why.
1) Trying out new frame position and want to test out raising and lowering stem before cutting fork. 2) Normally the steer tube is cut and will sit 2-3mm below the top of the stem. Some fork manufactures (i.e. Easton) require the stem grab the entire steer tube. Therefore a top spacer is needed.
